BSA 770cc Colonial Model 1928
The Birmingham Small Arms factory was established in Birmingham 1861 and as the name suggests manufactured weapons. Around the turn of the century they started making bicycles and progressed onto motorcycles a few years later. BSA went on to be one of the world's largest producers of motorcycles up until its demise in the early 1970s.
The Colonial machines were specifically designed for use in British colonies. For high speeds or in difficult country the extra power given the engine will add materially to the rider's comfort and the average road performance. The BSA 770 twin cylinder model is a typical example of the high standard of perfection to which the modern motor bicycle has been raised. As a super touring combination, it worthily upholds the highest traditions of British Engineering.
The 76×85 engine has the cylinders set at a 50 degree angle. The valves are interchangeable, with quickly adjustable tappets. The constant loss lubrication system employs a mechanical pump with an emergency hand pump. Primary and secondary transmission is by chain. The 1927-28 V-twin Model is available in versions Light and De Luxe and Colonial. The 770cc BSA is not only aimed at sidecar enthousiasts, but also at solo riders.
The 1927 catalogue states: “Although the present trend is to make all large twin cylinder machines almost solely passenger vehicles, it should be noted that the light model provides a sweet, easily handled solo mount for those riders who find a fascination in the big reserve of power and feeling of road supremacy coupled with the smooth running that can only be obtained from machines of the twin type.”
The BSA is an older restoration and comes with Lucas electrical lighting and bulb horn.
