The Famous James is one of the oldest British motorcycle marques, in fact one of the oldest worldwide. Originally established as The James Cycle Company Ltd, whose founder Harry James set up business in the 1880s in Birmingham, the heart of British industry. Initially making a Penny Farthing, followed by an array of popular bicycles, the company progressed swiftly and by 1902 the first James motorcycle was born. Numerous models followed, from economical small capacity two-strokes to a range of four-strokes that included the beautiful V-Twins, all aimed at the discerning customer. James also participated in the war effort, producing the ML (Military Lightweight) for the British Army.

James was a well-respected brand. James were very proud that they manufactured all of the major components for their machines, unlike many of its contemporaries which bought in the majority. The firm’s first V-Twin, the 3½ hp 500cc No. 7 became available in 1914, priced at 60 guineas. After WWI James continued to offer a quality range of both single and V-Twin machines with the Model 12 Sports Twin becoming available in 1923. They found great success in the popular reliability trials of the day, with all machines individually tested by the works before being despatched to the new owner.

The technical features includes of this 500cc James side valve  Sports engine 64mm x 77mm, Friction dampers to Webb pattern front forks, Adjustable sports type handlebar, Adjustable footrests, Aluminium silencer, Lubrication by mechanical pump with adjustable sight feed and auxiliary hand pump, Light chain guards, Villiers two lever carburettor, Terry multi spring saddle, Finished in black, Tank enamelled in two shades of brown lined red and gold.

This beautifully restored James is one of a small handful of survivors and would grace any collection.
